On a tragic day in the small community of Static, Tennessee, the lives of a father and son were brutally cut short. Cody Dwight Dowdy, a 22-year-old male, and his father, Danny Dwight Dowdy, 58, were found deceased on July 30, 2014, inside their family-owned package store, the Sugar Shack. The grim discovery was made on the morning of what would have been just another business day, but instead, the establishment became a crime scene.
It was soon confirmed by family members that both men had been shot.
The investigation into the double homicide was swift, with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation leading the case. Within a couple of days, on August 1, 2014, an arrest was made. Joshua Clay Pyles, a 34-year-old man from Monticello, Kentucky, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The investigation revealed that Pyles had been at the Sugar Shack on the day of the murders and lingered until all other customers had left.
In a confession to law enforcement, Pyles detailed the horrific events of that evening. He stated that after retrieving a handgun, he re-entered the business and, in a state of panic, shot Danny Dowdy before turning the weapon on his son, Cody. Pyles admitted to shooting both men a second time, claiming he did so to prevent their suffering. Following the senseless acts of violence, he stole approximately $400 from the cash register and fled the scene. Initially, Pyles pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, in May 2017, he changed his plea to guilty on two counts of premeditated murder and an additional charge of especially aggravated robbery. For his crimes, Joshua Clay Pyles was sentenced to a total of 69 years in prison, bringing a close to the legal chapter of a tragedy that deeply affected the close-knit community.
