In the fall of 2014, the community of Portland, Tennessee, was shaken by the tragic death of Tammy Hodges, a 36-year-old woman. Her life was abruptly ended on October 14, 2014, in a devastating act of domestic violence. Tammy, a Caucasian female, had been married to 47-year-old Richard Hinsley since July of that year, but the relationship had quickly soured, leading to their estrangement.
On that fateful Tuesday, Hinsley contacted Hodges and asked her to come to his residence on Jackson Street to discuss their relationship. Concerned when she did not return home, Hodges' family members went to Hinsley's house to check on her. Just before 10 p.m., they made a horrifying discovery, finding both Hodges and Hinsley deceased on the couch from gunshot wounds.
The subsequent investigation by the Portland Police Department concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide. It is believed that Hinsley shot and killed Hodges before turning the gun on himself. The investigation revealed a troubled dynamic in their brief marriage, with reports that Hinsley had previously threatened his estranged wife. Friends of Hinsley later recounted a chilling statement he allegedly made, declaring that if he couldn't have her, no one could. As the perpetrator took his own life, there were no arrests made or charges filed in connection with Tammy Hodges' death.
