On the evening of December 5, 2016, a tragedy unfolded on the streets of St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of a 17-year-old male named Damani Aitch, affectionately known as 'Rookie.' Damani was a creative and athletic teenager who had shown talent in drawing and was known for his ability to throw a football. His mother, Kimberly Jones, had worked tirelessly for nearly two decades to provide him with a positive upbringing, surrounding him with church leaders and mentors to guide him toward a promising future.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. as Damani was traveling in a vehicle in the 5400 block of Riverview Boulevard, near Northwest Middle School. He was accompanied by two other teenagers, leaving a basketball game, when an unknown vehicle pulled up behind them. Without warning, the occupants of the trailing car opened fire on the teens. Damani was struck by the gunfire and succumbed to his injuries. A 16-year-old passenger in the car sustained a gunshot wound to the hand and facial lacerations but survived, while a third passenger escaped physically unharmed.
In the wake of the shooting, the case remained unsolved, with investigators unable to identify the individuals responsible for the drive-by attack. As of late 2018, no arrests had been made, and the perpetrators remained at large. The senseless loss prompted his mother to speak out against the cycle of violence in the city, and Damani's story became a driving force behind the 'Life Outside of Violence' program, a hospital-based initiative designed to help victims of trauma and prevent retaliation. The St. Louis Regional CrimeStoppers continued to list his death as an open homicide, seeking information from the public to bring closure to a grieving family.
