In the small town of Big Sandy, Tennessee, a young man's life was cut short in the parking lot of a convenience store on the evening of November 16, 2015. Michael Anthony Nuzzo, a 19-year-old Caucasian male, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest following a physical altercation. The incident was the culmination of an ongoing dispute with another Big Sandy resident, George Edward Burns III.
On that fateful evening, Burns was seated in his vehicle when another car sped into the
parking lot. Nuzzo exited the second vehicle and began to punch Burns in the face. In response, Burns drew a handgun and fired one shot, striking Nuzzo in the chest. Emergency personnel attempted to revive him at the scene for twenty minutes before he was transported to Camden General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Burns waited at the scene for law enforcement to arrive.
George Edward Burns III, who was 21 at the time, was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Michael Nuzzo. Initially facing a charge of first-degree murder, the case went to trial. The jury ultimately found Burns not guilty of the initial charge but convicted him of second-degree murder, leading to a sentence of 17 years in prison.
However, the legal proceedings did not end there. A motion for a new trial was granted, and in a later development, Burns entered a best-interest plea to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. This resulted in an agreed-upon sentence of eight-and-a-half years to be served in confinement, bringing a final, albeit painful, resolution to the case for the families involved.
