In the small community of Big Sandy, Tennessee, the life of 26-year-old Alan Jay Grinnell, a White/Caucasian male, came to a tragic end on November 15, 2020. His death was not the result of an accident or natural causes but was determined to be a homicide, setting in motion an investigation that would ultimately point to the most unexpected of suspects.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called in to unravel the circumstances surrounding Alan's death, which occurred at a residence on New Hope Road.
As investigators delved into the case, a grim picture began to emerge, leading them to Alan's own parents. Evidence gathered during the investigation identified his father, Jay Edward Grinnell, as the individual responsible for his son's death. Subsequently, a Benton County Grand Jury returned indictments against both of Alan's parents. Jay Grinnell was charged with one count of second-degree murder, while his wife, Kathleen Ann Grinnell, faced a charge of felony accessory after the fact.
The attempt to bring the couple into custody escalated into a tense standoff with law enforcement. When agents arrived at the Grinnell home to serve the arrest warrants, Jay Grinnell initially refused to comply and dangerously attempted to run over the agents with his pickup truck. Following this, he and his wife barricaded themselves inside their residence. With the assistance of the Benton County Sheriff's Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the situation was eventually resolved, and both Jay and Kathleen Grinnell were taken into custody.
In addition to the charges related to their son's death, the confrontation with authorities led to further legal troubles for the couple. Jay Grinnell was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder for his actions against the TBI agents, as well as one count of resisting arrest. Kathleen Grinnell also faced a new charge of resisting arrest. Following their apprehension, they were both booked into the Benton County Jail. Bond for Jay Grinnell was set at $600,000, while Kathleen Grinnell's bond was set at $30,000.
