In the quiet community of Clarksville, Tennessee, a welfare check on the morning of January 7, 2018, led to a grim discovery that would set in motion a years-long investigation. Concerned for his well-being, officers from the Clarksville Police Department arrived at an apartment at 119 Bennett Drive around 10:44 a.m. Inside, they found 23-year-old Tavon Wilson, who had been shot multiple times and was deceased. The initial investigation treated the case as a homicide, with detectives processing the scene and beginning the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the young man's death.
For years, the case remained under active investigation, a painful open wound for the family and friends of Tavon Wilson. Detectives with the Clarksville Police Department's Special Operations Homicide Unit tirelessly pursued leads and gathered evidence. Their persistence eventually paid off, leading to a significant breakthrough more than four years after the fatal shooting.
Evidence was presented to the Montgomery County Grand Jury, a crucial step in seeking justice for Wilson.
In June 2022, the grand jury handed down an indictment, bringing a suspect to the forefront of the case. Twenty-six-year-old Devante Ladavid Ruffin was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony, and aggravated burglary. Ruffin was taken into custody while appearing in general sessions court for unrelated charges and was subsequently booked into the Montgomery County Jail with his bond set at $200,000. While the arrest marked a major development, authorities stated that the investigation was still ongoing.
