In the early morning hours of a Tuesday in August 2018, the quiet of a Maryville, Tennessee neighborhood was shattered by a fatal act of violence. Jimmy Shelton, a 44-year-old man, was shot multiple times at a residence on Beaver Drive and pronounced dead at the scene. His life was cut short in what authorities would describe as a domestic situation, not a random act of violence.
Responding to a 6 a.m. call from a man named Sean who reported a shooting, deputies from the Blount County Sheriff's Office arrived at the home to find 24-year-old Sean Foley and a 25-year-old woman outside. Foley informed the dispatchers that he had placed a gun in the mailbox. Inside, on the back porch, law enforcement discovered Shelton's body. Foley was taken into custody and charged with criminal homicide, held on a $1 million bond.
The investigation that followed painted a complex picture of the events leading up to the shooting. Foley, an Army veteran, claimed he had acted in defense of his girlfriend, Miranda Goddard. He told investigators he overheard a conversation that led him to believe Shelton was sexually abusing her. This prompted him to confront the unarmed Shelton with a gun, a confrontation that ended in tragedy. Goddard's statements, captured on police dash-cam footage, seemed to support Foley's account.
