On September 14, 2019, young Destiny, a female student at Fountain City Elementary, died from a gunshot wound she sustained in her family's residence. The events that unfolded in the aftermath of the shooting would reveal a tangled web of deceit and a mother's desperate attempts to conceal the truth.
Initially, first responders and
investigators were met with a series of conflicting narratives from Destiny's mother, Robin Howington. Her first account described a horrifying home invasion, where an unknown man entered their house, shot her daughter, and fled. This story soon changed, with Howington then pointing the finger at Destiny's father, Antoine Oliver, claiming he was the one who had fired the fatal shot. The shifting stories raised suspicion among law enforcement, prompting a deeper investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young girl's death.
As the investigation progressed, Howington's stories continued to unravel. She later accused her boyfriend of hiding the handgun involved in the shooting. However, a neighbor's surveillance footage contradicted this claim, showing Howington herself stashing the weapon in a nearby bush. In July 2020, a grand jury indicted Robin Howington on multiple charges, including felony murder, which alleges a killing occurred during the commission of another felony, in this case, aggravated child neglect. In March 2024, after a trial where prosecutors laid out her repeated lies and attempts to mislead investigators, a jury found Robin Howington guilty of reckless homicide, two counts of aggravated child neglect, making a false report, and tampering with evidence. The following month, a judge sentenced the 41-year-old mother to 22 years in prison for her role in the tragic death of her young daughter.
