In the small community of Rocky Top, Tennessee, a long-simmering dispute between neighbors erupted into a fatal act of violence on the morning of November 23, 2019. David Ray Roach Jr., a 43-year-old male, was shot and killed outside a residence on Willow Lane, a place that was once part of Lake City. The man responsible for his death was his neighbor, George Michael Patterson, who was 64 years old at the time of the incident.
The conflict between Roach and Patterson had been escalating
for some time, a fact known to others in their community. Tensions had reportedly risen to the point where Roach had expressed concerns about Patterson's behavior to the local police. The feud, which had been ongoing for about a year, reached its tragic conclusion when a verbal altercation between the two men turned deadly. Patterson shot his unarmed neighbor four times. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Roach was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Rocky Top Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to the arrest of George Michael Patterson. He was taken into custody and charged with criminal homicide. In September 2020, an Anderson County Grand Jury indicted Patterson on a charge of first-degree murder. He remained in custody from his arrest through the conclusion of his legal proceedings.
The case went to trial, and in February 2025, a jury found George Michael Patterson guilty of second-degree murder. The verdict acknowledged the unlawful killing of David Roach but did not meet the state's threshold for premeditated first-degree murder. Subsequently, in May 2025, Patterson, then 69 years old, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of his neighbor, bringing a close to a tragic story of a neighborhood dispute that ended in a senseless loss of life.
