On a tragic day in Athens, Tennessee, the life of 39-year-old Brandy Nicole Harris was cut short in a brutal act of violence that also claimed the lives of three other individuals. The events of September 25, 2021, unfolded at a residence in McMinn County, leaving the community in shock and mourning. Alongside Harris, Jesse Dupree, age 40, Skylar Hawn, age 24, and Trevon Hall, age 36, were also found deceased.
The investigation into the quadruple homicide quickly pointed to a custody
dispute as the motive behind the killings. Authorities identified two suspects, Jasmine Hall and Curtis Dotson Smith, who were promptly arrested in connection with the deaths. The dispute reportedly centered around a 10-month-old child shared by Jasmine Hall and one of the victims, Trevon Hall.
According to investigators, Jasmine Hall and Curtis Smith went to the residence where the victims were located. An altercation ensued, escalating to deadly violence. It was reported that Hall initiated the shooting, targeting the father of her child, before encouraging Smith to shoot the remaining individuals. In a harrowing detail that emerged, one witness managed to survive by pretending to be deceased. Following the shootings, Hall and Smith fled the scene with the infant, who was later found safe.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a measure of justice for the victims and their families. In April 2024, Jasmine Hall entered a guilty plea to multiple charges, including first-degree murder. She was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. Initially, prosecutors had intended to seek the death penalty, but this was waived as part of the plea agreement.
Shortly after Hall's conviction, in May 2024, Curtis Dotson Smith also pleaded guilty to his role in the murders. He too was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without parole, in addition to 28 years for other charges related to the incident. With the convictions of both individuals, the legal chapter of this devastating case came to a close, leaving a community to remember the four lives senselessly lost.
