On the evening of December 24, 2021, a grim discovery was made in a home in Dandridge, Tennessee, shattering the peace of the holiday. Edward W. Atkins, a 70-year-old Caucasian male, was found deceased inside his residence. He was not alone; the body of his 43-year-old daughter, Melissa J. Burgess-Smith, was also discovered at the scene. The Sevier County Sheriff's Office was called to the Asheville Highway home around 9:30 p.m. following a report of a shooting.
