On a summer evening in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 27-year-old Jeremy Smith, an African American male, was tragically cut short. On June 5, 2022, officers from the Memphis Police Department responded to a shooting at an apartment on North Claybrook Street. Inside, they discovered Smith on the floor, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly revealed a robbery gone wrong.
Four individuals were identified as being involved in the violent act. According to police, the suspects had planned to rob Smith. Their alleged plan turned deadly when a gunshot was fired, ending Smith's life. As police sirens wailed in the distance, the suspects reportedly fled the scene, with some being spotted jumping a fence into a neighboring yard.
A swift police response led to the apprehension of three of the four suspects after a short foot chase. The individuals taken into custody were identified as 20-year-old Trevion Clark, 25-year-old Jamie Rogers, and 19-year-old Daterrius Banks. A fourth individual, 20-year-old Kierra Carr, was found in a car at the apartment complex, attempting to leave. A search of the area where the male suspects had fled uncovered two handguns, a shotgun, a rifle, and a backpack.
All four individuals were subsequently charged in connection with the death of Jeremy Smith. The charges brought against them included first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, and especially aggravated burglary. Following their arrests, Clark and Banks were held without bond, while Carr's bond was set at $1 million and Rogers' at $10,000. The fourth male suspect who fled the scene was not immediately apprehended.
