On June 30, 2022, Marquicha Thomas, a 28-year-old Black woman and mother of eight, was shot and killed at her home in Cordova, Tennessee. The tragic event unfolded following a heated argument with her boyfriend, 33-year-old Byron Pipkin. According to witnesses, the couple was arguing in the garage of their residence when Thomas attempted to flee. As she ran from the garage into the front yard, Pipkin fatally shot her. One of her own children, a 10-year-old son, witnessed the horrific event while hiding inside a car in the garage.
After shooting Thomas, Pipkin dragged her body from the front yard back into the garage. He then went inside the house, took one of Thomas's 6-year-old children, and fled the scene in a white Mercedes-Benz. In a brazen attempt to mislead law enforcement, Pipkin called 911 as he drove away, falsely reporting that another man had shot his girlfriend and that he was following the supposed perpetrator. He later dropped the 6-year-old child off unharmed at the home of a family member's friend.
A tip led authorities to the Economy Inn in South Memphis the next day, where Pipkin had barricaded himself inside a motel room. After a tense three-hour standoff with a SWAT team, Pipkin surrendered and was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including first-degree premeditated murder, especially aggravated kidnapping, domestic assault, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
In February 2024, Byron Pipkin's case went to trial. The prosecution's case was significantly bolstered by the testimony of three of Thomas's children, including the son who witnessed his mother's murder. After a week-long trial, a jury found Pipkin guilty on all charges. His sentencing was scheduled for April 1, 2024. Family members, including Thomas's father, later spoke about the warning signs of abuse in the relationship, expressing profound grief and regret that she was unable to leave before it was too late.
