In the Highland Heights neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee, a late autumn evening turned tragic for 68-year-old Dwight Payne. On November 17, 2022, the African American man's life was abruptly ended by a senseless act of gun violence. Payne was in the company of a woman on the 3100 block of Faxon when the fatal encounter occurred.
According to witness accounts, an unknown gunman approached the pair and, without warning, fired a shot at Payne from point-blank range.
The assailant then discharged another round before making a swift escape from the scene. The brazen attack left Payne with critical injuries. He was found unresponsive and rushed to Regional One Hospital, but his wounds proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
In the wake of the shooting, the Memphis Police Department launched a homicide investigation into Payne's death. Despite their efforts, no arrests have been made in the case, and a suspect has not been publicly identified. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek information from the public that could lead to the apprehension of the individual responsible for Dwight Payne's murder.
