A 35 year old father and Army veteran is shot at his Montgomery, AL barber shop
On a day that should have been filled with celebration, a beloved member of the Montgomery, Alabama community was taken too soon. On October 14, 2014, which was also the 17th birthday of his son, 35-year-old Charlie Jay McCord, a male U.S. Army veteran and father of eight, was fatally shot inside his own business. The tragic event unfolded at his barbershop, 'Mr Barber Man,' located in the 1500 block of Mt. Meigs Road.
The morning of his death, McCord had dropped his youngest daughter off at his mother's house before heading to the barbershop he had worked so hard to establish. A few hours later, at approximately 12:00 p.m., an unknown individual entered the shop and shot McCord multiple times. The assailant then left, closing the door and leaving McCord to bleed. First responders arrived at the scene and transported him to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries during surgery. Authorities have stated that they believe the motive for the attack was burglary.
In the years since the murder, the case has remained unsolved, leaving a void in the lives of his family and community. The Montgomery Police Department and the District Attorney's Cold Case Unit have continued to investigate the homicide. In 2015, investigators released a photograph of an unidentified man who was seen walking towards the barbershop and is considered a suspect. This individual has yet to be identified.
More recently, in August of 2022, investigators released new information to the public in the hopes of generating fresh leads. Photos of a vehicle were made public, with authorities stating that the person driving this vehicle had contact with McCord inside the barbershop shortly before his death. This vehicle is considered a significant piece of the puzzle in the ongoing investigation. A $5,000 reward has been offered by CrimeStoppers for any information that leads to an arrest in the case. Despite these efforts, no arrests have been made, and the person or persons responsible for Charlie Jay McCord's death remain at large. His family continues to seek closure and justice.
