Private Francis A. Zehringer, a 34-year-old Caucasian male from Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, died on September 2, 1906, in Anita, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Police and had previously served in the 4th U.S. Cavalry and the U.S. Coast Artillery. On the day of his death, Private Zehringer and other troopers were attempting to arrest fugitives from the Black Hand Society who were barricaded in a house in Florence, Jefferson County.
