In the late summer of 1906, a violent encounter in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, led to the death of 34-year-old Private Francis A. Zehringer of the Pennsylvania State Police. On Sunday, September 2, 1906, law enforcement officers converged on a house in a settlement known as Florence, near present-day Anita. Inside, a group of heavily armed men, identified as members of the Black Hand Society and wanted for murder, had barricaded themselves, refusing to surrender.
