On a tragic day in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, 37-year-old Elmer Weaver was one of several victims in a horrific shooting spree that unfolded on October 23, 1967. The male victim lost his life to gun violence that day.
The perpetrator was identified as 40-year-old Leo Held, a coworker of some of the victims. Armed with two pistols, Held began his rampage at the Hammermill Paper Company, his place of employment.
It was there that he shot and killed his boss and then proceeded to a second-floor laboratory where he opened fire on several more of his colleagues, including Elmer Weaver.
After leaving the paper mill, Held continued his violent spree, shooting another individual at the William T. Piper Memorial Airport and then driving to the home of a neighbor where he claimed more lives. By the end of his rampage, Held had killed six people and wounded six others. One of the wounded victims later died from their injuries years later.
The tragic event came to a close when law enforcement engaged in a shootout with Held. He was mortally wounded during the exchange and died in the hospital two days later. In total, the devastating series of events claimed the lives of seven innocent people, with an eighth victim succumbing to her injuries in 1972, in addition to the perpetrator.
