In the early hours of a summer day in Morea, Pennsylvania, a grim scene unfolded that would leave a lasting scar on the small community. On August 15, 2002, 22-year-old Raienhana Bechtel was tragically killed in her home. Her life was cut short in a violent rampage that also claimed the lives of her three-year-old son, Jacob Bechtel, and two friends, Kristen L. Tragus, 34, and David D. Barkus, 30.
The perpetrator was Raienhana's estranged husband, Michael Harley Bechtel, who was 26 at the time. Fueled by methamphetamine, he entered his wife's home and shot all four victims in the head with a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol. After the killings, he turned the gun on himself in a failed suicide attempt. He was discovered with a serious head wound on the floor near his son's bed. The discovery was made later that evening when Raienhana's mother, Joan Michelle Starr, grew concerned after her daughter failed to answer repeated phone calls. Looking through a window, she saw the horrific scene and immediately contacted the authorities. State troopers from the Frackville barracks found Raienhana, Tragus, and Barkus at the kitchen table, while young Jacob was found in his bed upstairs.
Michael Bechtel survived his self-inflicted gunshot wound and was charged with four counts of homicide. Initially facing the death penalty, he later entered into a plea bargain that resulted in a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The families of the victims reportedly agreed to the plea deal to avoid the emotional turmoil of a lengthy trial.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, a lawsuit was filed against the police and Schuylkill County. The suit alleged that law enforcement had failed to protect Raienhana and her son by returning a gun to Michael Bechtel despite a protection-from-abuse order that should have prohibited him from possessing firearms. The lawsuit claimed negligence on the part of the authorities in handling domestic violence complaints. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence and brought attention to the need for stricter enforcement of protection orders.
