Kristen L. Tragus, a 34-year-old female from Lost Creek No. 2 near Morea, Pennsylvania, was killed on August 15, 2002, inside a home at 19 Lower Street in the village of Morea. Online memorial and obituary sources describe her as having been born in Ashland, raised in the Shenandoah Valley area, and employed as a certified nurse’s assistant. She was remembered as part of a close local family, survived by her mother, sisters, and extended relatives.
The violence unfolded at the home of Raienhna Bechtel, where Kristen was among the people present that summer evening. What should have been an ordinary night in a small Schuylkill County community turned into a quadruple killing. Authorities said Michael Harley Bechtel, Raienhna’s estranged husband, went to the residence and opened fire. Kristen was killed along with Raienhna Bechtel, Raienhna’s three-year-old son Jacob, and David D. Barkus. Kristen was pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m. at the scene.
Investigators quickly focused on Michael Bechtel, who was then in his mid-20s. Reports described the case as rooted in domestic violence: Bechtel was Raienhna’s estranged husband, and prosecutors later noted that he was subject to a protection-from-abuse order at the time of the killings. After the shootings, Bechtel shot himself in the head in an apparent suicide attempt, but survived. He was left seriously injured and was later described as using a wheelchair while the criminal case moved forward.
Schuylkill County prosecutors pursued the case as a capital murder prosecution. District Attorney Frank Cori said the state would seek the death penalty, pointing to aggravating circumstances that included multiple homicide victims, the killing of a child under 12, and the protection-from-abuse order involving Bechtel. The killings devastated several families at once: Kristen’s family lost a daughter and sister, the Barkus family lost David, and Raienhna’s family lost both her and young Jacob.
In January 2004, Michael Bechtel pleaded guilty to the murders. Rather than proceed to a death penalty trial, prosecutors and the victims’ families accepted a resolution that ensured he would spend the rest of his life in prison. He received four consecutive life sentences for the killings of Raienhna Bechtel, Jacob Bechtel, Kristen Tragus, and David Barkus.
Years later, Bechtel attempted to undo his guilty plea. In 2009, he argued that his original lawyer had been ineffective and that he had not fully understood what happened that night. The court rejected the petition, finding that the filing came too late and that the original plea and sentencing had been properly handled. As a result, his convictions and four consecutive life terms remained in place.
