In what began as a neighborhood feud, 51-year-old Brooks Jennings was shot and killed. The fatal encounter was the culmination of a series of disputes with his neighbor.
The relationship between Jennings and his neighbor had been deteriorating for some time, leading to multiple calls to the police. On at least two prior occasions, the neighbor had brandished a gun during their arguments, causing Jennings to back down.
The situation escalated to the point where, hours before the shooting, another argument prompted a police visit to the properties.
On the night of the incident, Jennings was at home with his wife. After they put their son to bed, Jennings went outside. His wife heard her husband's voice and that of the neighbor, and then the sound of a gunshot. The neighbor was subsequently arrested and brought to trial for the shooting.
During the trial, the prosecution argued that the killing was a calculated act, stating that the neighbor had brought a concealed weapon outside with the intent to end their feud. They also alleged that a knife was planted near Jennings' body to stage a scene of self-defense. The defense, however, claimed that Jennings had provoked the neighbor upon his return from a late-night grocery run by shining a spotlight in his direction. They also stated that Jennings had set up a lawn chair near the property line. An argument reportedly ensued over a skeleton lawn decoration that the neighbor refused to remove.
