In the autumn of 2011, 62-year-old Thomas Hayden Sr. vanished from his home in Dover Township, Pennsylvania. For years, his absence was shrouded in mystery, with his wife, Virginia Hayden, claiming he had traveled to Mexico to seek medical treatment for ALS. This narrative, however, began to unravel, leading to a grim discovery and a startling revelation of betrayal and greed.
The first crack in the facade appeared in January 2012, when a bag containing a human scalp with hair tied in a
ponytail, along with blood-soaked cloth, was found along a road in Dover Township. Initially, the remains could not be identified. The investigation into Thomas Hayden's disappearance languished until his daughter from a previous relationship, who had been estranged from her father, reported him missing in 2017 after her stepmother repeatedly prevented her from speaking with him. This report prompted a renewed look at the unidentified remains. With DNA samples from Thomas's brothers, investigators were finally able to confirm the scalp belonged to him.
The focus of the investigation quickly centered on Virginia Hayden. Authorities discovered that she had been forging her husband's signature on legal documents and had illegally collected over $113,000 of his Social Security benefits in the years following his disappearance. It was also revealed that she had purchased a. 357 caliber handgun shortly before he went missing. A forensic pathologist determined that Thomas Hayden had likely died from a gunshot wound.
In April 2019, Virginia Hayden, then 67, was arrested and charged with criminal homicide. The investigation also implicated her daughter, Connie Pender, who was charged with tampering with public records and conspiracy for her role in the deception. Pender later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation.
Facing a trial for first-degree murder and numerous other charges, Virginia Hayden entered a no-contest plea to third-degree murder and tampering with evidence in September 2022. This plea, while not an admission of guilt, is treated as such in court. She was sentenced to six to 20 years in prison for her husband's murder. The full body of Thomas Hayden has never been recovered.
