In the quiet community of Shaler Township, Pennsylvania, a devastating tragedy unfolded in the early morning hours of August 22, 2013, forever altering the lives of the Edwards family. Laurin Edwards, a 19-year-old female, was fatally shot and killed inside her family's home on Winterset Drive. The vibrant young woman, who had just celebrated her birthday the day before, was on the cusp of returning to Saint Francis University for her sophomore year, where she was studying to become a physician's assistant.
The architect of this horrific event was Laurin's own father, 52-year-old James Edwards. In an act of unthinkable violence, he went from room to room, opening fire on his family members. Laurin was shot twice and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her mother, Charlene Edwards, and her 21-year-old brother, Jimmy, were also shot and critically wounded but miraculously survived the attack. After shooting his family and the family dog, James Edwards turned the gun on himself, taking his own life.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a motive began to surface. James Edwards, an electrician at Pittsburgh International Airport, had recently been suspended from his job and was reportedly facing termination on the day of the shooting due to allegations of sexual harassment and insubordination. They chose to remain in their home, surrounded by the memories of Laurin, and established the Laurin Edwards Scholarship Fund to help other students pursuing a career as a physician's assistant.
