Theresa Hunt, a 53-year-old woman, tragically lost her life on July 24, 2014, in Darby, Pennsylvania. She was a caseworker at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital and was fatally shot by a patient during a routine appointment. The incident occurred inside the office of psychiatrist Dr. Lee Silverman, where Theresa Hunt was providing support to the patient.
The suspect, Richard Plotts, a 49-year-old man, had arrived early for his appointment with a gun hidden in his waistband.
During the appointment, an argument ensued, and Plotts suddenly pulled out the gun and shot Theresa Hunt at point-blank range, killing her instantly. Dr. Silverman, who was present in the office, quickly took cover and returned fire, wounding Plotts and preventing further harm.
Following the shooting, Dr. Silverman and another caseworker, John D'Alonzo, engaged in a physical struggle with Plotts to disarm him and hold him until the police arrived. In December 2014, Richard Plotts pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, in a subsequent court appearance, he entered a plea of guilty but mentally ill to first-degree murder, attempted murder, and illegally possessing a firearm. He now faces life in prison for his actions.
