A simmering family dispute that began months earlier at Christmas culminated in the tragic death of 59-year-old Jorge Rodriguez, a male resident of Trenton, during a Labor Day weekend family gathering in Bristol Township. The festive occasion on August 31, 2014, turned deadly when William Rivera, Rodriguez's 64-year-old brother-in-law, shot him with a shotgun inside the living room of a home on Fayette Drive.
The fatal shooting occurred in the presence of Rivera's wife and 7-year-old son, shattering the holiday reunion.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Rodriguez deceased in a pool of his own blood. The ensuing investigation revealed that the deadly confrontation stemmed from a disagreement between the two men that had its roots in an incident at Christmas. Rivera was taken into custody in connection with the shooting.
In the legal proceedings that followed, William Rivera faced justice for his actions. In March of the following year, he pleaded guilty to third-degree homicide, possession of an instrument of crime, and two counts of recklessly endangering another person. Consequently, Rivera was sentenced to a prison term of 10 to 32 years for the murder of his brother-in-law.
