On October 17, 2014, 27-year-old Stephen Edward Mixon, a male of Caucasian descent from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, was found deceased in a parked car near state game lands in Washington Township, Berks County. The discovery was made around 6:15 a.m. by a passerby who reported seeing the bodies. Stephen was a well-known figure in his community, recognized for his dedication as a volunteer coach with the Pottsgrove High School football team, earning him the nickname "Mr. Pottsgrove Football."
He was also employed as the retail manager at the Schuylkill Valley Sports store in Audubon, where he was remembered by his co-workers as a loving and funny person who was hardworking, upbeat, and a pleasure to be around.
The Berks County Coroner's office, in collaboration with the Berks County District Attorney and Pennsylvania State Police, conducted an investigation into the deaths. They determined that Stephen Mixon died from a gunshot wound inflicted by 20-year-old Joseph McCullough III, also of Pottstown, who then turned the weapon on himself, resulting in his own death. The firearm used was a .38 caliber revolver. Authorities ruled the incident a murder-suicide.
Stephen's passing was deeply mourned by his family, friends, and the community. He was remembered as a son, friend, mentor, brother, coach, uncle, cousin, and nephew, known for his kindness and loving nature. His legacy was celebrated during a memorial service held at Pennypacker Field at Lower Pottsgrove High School on October 25, 2014.
