In the summer of 1997, a playful four-year-old girl named Jessica Phelps vanished from her front yard in Flint, Michigan, sparking a case that would remain a painful mystery for decades. On July 1st of that year, Jessica was playing outside her home on Maryland Avenue. Her mother, having just returned from McDonald's with Jessica and her younger brother, had gone inside to take a quick shower. When she came out, Jessica was gone.
The close-knit neighborhood, where children often ran between yards, was searched, but there was no sign of the little girl.
The initial disappearance triggered an extensive search effort. Hundreds of volunteers joined police in scouring the area, putting up fliers, and searching along Kearsley Creek and the Flint River. Despite these efforts, which included lowering a portion of the river, no trace of Jessica was found. Her case was even featured on 'America's Most Wanted,' generating a tip that unfortunately did not lead to her discovery. A grim discovery nearly a year later brought a devastating end to the hope of finding Jessica alive. On April 2, 1998, a road commission worker discovered the skeletal remains of a child in a culvert in Atlas Township, about 15 miles from where Jessica had disappeared. Alongside the remains were pieces of clothing that matched what she was last seen wearing. Two days later, dental records confirmed the remains belonged to Jessica Phelps.
Due to the condition of her remains after being exposed to the elements for so long, authorities were unable to determine a conclusive cause of death. However, they believe she was likely asphyxiated on the same day she went missing. Her death was officially ruled a homicide. Despite the passage of time and ongoing efforts by the Flint Police Department, no arrests have ever been made in connection with the abduction and murder of Jessica Phelps.
