According to a witness, Ryan had agreed to accompany the witness and Kristopher Lott to buy Percocets. During the drive, Lott became aggressive and demanded money from Ryan. The situation escalated, and Lott eventually pulled over and ordered Ryan out of the car. Lott followed Ryan into the woods, where a single gunshot was heard. Lott then returned to the car alone.
Kristopher Lott was charged with criminal homicide, kidnapping, robbery, and abuse of a corpse. He later pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and was sentenced to 27 1/2 to 60 years in prison. The motive for the shooting was not disclosed by the police.
Ryan's family admitted that he had struggled with drug abuse, specifically heroin. His brother, Sean Ramirez, emphasized the dangers of heroin and the impact it had on Ryan's life. The family has since created a program called Rebound 4 Ryan, which mentors children and honors Ryan's memory through basketball and scholarships.
