Julian Michael Hoffman, a six-year-old boy from West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, tragically passed away on August 9, 2017. Julian was a bright and funny child who had just finished kindergarten at Emerson Elementary. He was known for his firecracker attitude and his ability to make everyone around him laugh. Julian enjoyed playing video games, riding his bike, and watching movies.
On the day of his death, Julian was home alone with his older brother, who was ten years old. The older brother had access to a 9mm pistol that belonged to their mother and was legally owned by her. Unfortunately, the older brother accidentally shot Julian in the head with the firearm. Julian was rushed to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, where he was pronounced dead just before 11 a.m.
The incident was ruled a homicide, but no charges have been filed as the investigation continues. Allegheny County detectives are handling the case, and the focus is on understanding how the child got access to the gun. The mother, who was at work at the time, and her live-in boyfriend, whose whereabouts were unknown, have not been charged.
