In the late winter of 2018, the life of a young woman, 23-year-old Kasandra Ortiz, was tragically cut short in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. On February 26th, her body was discovered near a dumpster on North Rock Street, the victim of a fatal shotgun wound to the head. The ensuing investigation quickly pointed to a local resident, Jose Colon, as the perpetrator of this violent act. It was revealed that before her death, Ortiz had also been physically beaten.
The motive behind the senseless killing, as admitted by Colon himself, was a desperate and drug-fueled desire for more narcotics from Ortiz. In the aftermath of the murder, Colon barricaded himself inside his apartment building, leading to a tense, hours-long standoff with law enforcement. During this confrontation, he held his roommate hostage at gunpoint and fired multiple shots at the police officers who had surrounded the building. The standoff concluded only after a SERT member's bullet struck Colon.
During his arraignment, a distraught Colon confessed to the murder of Kasandra Ortiz and, in a surprising turn, requested the death penalty, stating a desire to 'pay for my crimes.' In addition to the homicide charge, he faced numerous other serious charges stemming from the standoff, including multiple counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
In May of 2023, Jose Colon pleaded guilty to the murder of Kasandra Ortiz. Later that year, in October, a judge in Northumberland County sentenced him to a term of 46 to 92 years in prison, ensuring that he would be held accountable for the brutal and tragic end he brought to Kasandra Ortiz's life.
