In the spring of 2018, the life of 19-year-old Tommy Ballard was tragically cut short in a burst of violence that also claimed the life of his friend. On the evening of May 4th, in the Winder Village neighborhood of Bristol, Pennsylvania, what should have been a time of celebration, with many local teens preparing for their prom, turned into a scene of chaos and bloodshed.
Ballard and another 19-year-old, Zyisean McDuffie, were fatally shot during an altercation that erupted outside a home on Elmhurst Drive.
The incident began when a car carrying Ballard, McDuffie, and another man arrived at the residence. An argument quickly escalated, leading to gunfire. In the aftermath, two young men lay dead, and a community was left in shock. The investigation into the double homicide was swiftly undertaken by the Bristol Township Police and Bucks County detectives, who pieced together the events of that fatal evening. Their work led to the identification and arrest of two men in connection with the killings.
The two suspects were identified as Joseph Williams and Gary Goddard. Following their arrests, both men faced a jury trial that lasted for nearly three weeks. The prosecution presented evidence and testimony that detailed the defendants' roles in the violent encounter. The jury found Joseph Williams guilty of two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of both Tommy Ballard and Zyisean McDuffie. He was also convicted of the attempted murder of a third individual. For his crimes, Williams was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole.
Gary Goddard was also convicted for his involvement in the incident. His charges included attempted murder. The trial revealed that during the altercation, Goddard had also fired a weapon. He was subsequently sentenced to a prison term of 12 and a half to 25 years. The convictions and sentencing of both men brought a measure of justice for the tragic and senseless deaths of two teenagers on what should have been a joyous night.
