In the late hours of a Friday night in June 2019, the life of Kaine Williams, a 34-year-old African American man from McKeesport, Pennsylvania, was brought to a tragic and violent end. On June 21, just before 11:30 p.m., Williams was outside his home on Sumac Street with a woman when a car pulled up. The man behind the wheel was Marcus Acie-Griffin, the ex-boyfriend of the woman Williams had recently started dating.
Acie-Griffin emerged from his vehicle armed with a shotgun, his anger fueled by Williams' new relationship. As he confronted the pair, Williams reportedly tried to de-escalate the situation, telling him to 'chill out.' The plea was ignored. Acie-Griffin chased Williams and fired multiple shots, striking him in the head, shoulder, and back. Williams, a father to three boys who were reportedly inside the house at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Immediately following the fatal shooting, Marcus Acie-Griffin fled in his white Acura, sparking a massive police response. A little over two hours later, around 1:30 a.m., police spotted his vehicle. When they attempted to pull him over, Acie-Griffin initiated a perilous, high-speed chase that spanned across multiple counties and reportedly reached speeds of up to 155 mph. During the nearly hour-long pursuit, he struck three police cars. The chase finally came to an end in West Mifflin after officers successfully deployed spike strips. Though his tires were blown, Acie-Griffin continued to drive until he lost control and crashed his car over a hillside on Madison Avenue. Even after the crash, he attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers. A 12-gauge shotgun, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered from his car.
The investigation revealed a history of conflict and violence preceding the murder. Court documents indicated that about a month earlier, Acie-Griffin had assaulted and strangled his ex-girlfriend. The very next day, he broke into her home and attacked Kaine Williams, who was staying there at the time. Following his capture, Acie-Griffin was charged with a litany of offenses, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and fleeing and eluding police. His case went to trial, where his defense argued that he had acted in the heat of passion. However, the jury found that the killing was a premeditated act. On January 31, 2023, Marcus Acie-Griffin was found guilty of first-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would be held accountable for the life he had taken.
