On a late winter evening, a dispute during a pickup basketball game inside an LA Fitness in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, tragically escalated, leading to the death of 28-year-old Alan Jamal Womack Jr. The incident, which occurred on February 28, 2020, spilled out into the gym's parking lot, culminating in a fatal shooting. Womack, a former college basketball player and a regular at the fitness center, was a male who resided just a block away from the location.
The argument began on the
court over a gameplay dispute. Following the initial confrontation, the other man involved decided to leave the game and the gym. Womack followed him out into the parking lot. The verbal altercation continued and intensified. Both Womack and the other man were legally licensed to carry firearms. As the confrontation in the parking lot escalated, Womack drew his weapon. The other man, who has not been publicly identified, also drew his firearm and shot Womack. Womack was struck in the chest and, as he fell, he fired his gun. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Upper Merion Township police responded to the scene, and several persons of interest were detained for questioning. The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office launched a thorough investigation into the shooting. After reviewing evidence, which included surveillance footage and witness statements, the District Attorney announced that no criminal charges would be filed against the shooter. The investigation concluded that the shooter acted in self-defense. The District Attorney’s office stated that evidence indicated the shooter had attempted to de-escalate the situation multiple times before the fatal encounter. Because no charges were filed, the identity of the shooter was not released to the public.
