On December 15, 2020, 15-year-old Jafar Brooks, a freshman at Central Catholic High School and the grandson of Rashad Byrdsong, a well-known anti-violence activist, was tragically shot and killed in the Leechburg Garden Apartments in Penn Hills, Pennsylvania. Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene, having suffered a gunshot wound to the neck. The incident occurred shortly after midnight, and police believe Brooks was targeted.
