In the early morning hours of December 15, 2020, the life of 15-year-old Jafar Brooks, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a violent encounter. Police in Penn Hills responded to a call shortly after 12:40 a.m. in the 1900 block of Garden Drive, near the Leechburg Garden Apartments. There, they discovered a grim scene: an SUV was stopped in the middle of the road with its passenger door ajar. Beside the vehicle, Jafar was lying face down, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene just before 1 a.m.
The initial investigation suggested that this was not a random act of violence, but that Jafar had been specifically targeted. Surveillance footage from the area proved crucial, capturing the moments leading up to the shooting. The video showed the SUV pulling to a stop before three other males surrounded Jafar outside the vehicle. A struggle ensued, described by investigators as the individuals 'tussling with him,' which tragically escalated to the sound of gunshots. The footage showed Jafar attempting to get back into the passenger side of the vehicle as his assailants fled, with one turning to fire two more shots toward the SUV. His grandfather, community activist Rashad Byrdsong, later identified his grandson.
For months, the case remained under investigation until a significant breakthrough occurred. In October 2021, Allegheny County Police announced the arrest of 17-year-old Timothy Whitfield Jr., identifying him as one of the individuals responsible for Jafar's death. The arrest came after a thorough investigation which included a search of Whitfield's home where police found spent shell casings. Ballistic tests confirmed that one of these casings matched one found at the murder scene. Further evidence came from fingerprints lifted from the vehicle, which also linked Whitfield to the crime. He was subsequently charged with criminal homicide, robbery, conspiracy, and possession of a firearm by a minor. While police believed two other young men were involved, only Whitfield faced charges.
Nearly three years after Jafar's death, the legal process reached its conclusion. In October 2023, Timothy Whitfield, by then 19 years old, accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, robbery, and conspiracy. During the sentencing, a relative of Jafar wept in the courtroom as Whitfield declined to make a statement. The judge expressed her disappointment that he did not offer an apology for the heartbreak he had caused. In accordance with the plea agreement, he was sentenced to serve 7½ to 15 years in prison. The tragic loss of Jafar, a student and freshman football player at Central Catholic High School, continued to resonate within the community, and in 2024, the school posthumously honored him at what would have been his graduation ceremony.
