On a cold February morning, the body of 47-year-old Rebecca Landrith, a female former model, was discovered by a roadside worker along an Interstate 80 exit ramp in Union County, Pennsylvania. An autopsy would later reveal the brutal nature of her death; she had been shot numerous times in the head, neck, chest, and hands. Investigators found no identification on her person, but a crucial clue was discovered in her jacket pocket: a note bearing the name Tracy Rollins.
This discovery would be the key to unraveling the events that led to her demise.
The note in Landrith's pocket led authorities to Tracy Ray Rollins Jr., a 28-year-old truck driver from Texas. Through surveillance footage and cellphone data, investigators were able to piece together Landrith's final days, showing her in the company of Rollins at truck stops in Wisconsin and Ohio. This evidence suggested that Landrith had been traveling with Rollins in his truck across several states before she was killed. A few days after Landrith's body was found, police located and arrested Rollins at a truck stop in Connecticut. A search of his truck revealed evidence of the crime, including bullet holes and cleaning supplies that had been used in an attempt to erase what had happened.
Initially, Rollins denied knowing Landrith, claiming he had been traveling with a woman named 'Leslie'. However, the evidence against him was substantial. He was charged with criminal homicide and abuse of a corpse. In a deal with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty, Tracy Ray Rollins Jr. pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and 20 counts of abuse of a corpse. In November 2022, he was sentenced to 40 to 80 years in state prison. While justice was served, the motive behind the violent act remains unclear as Rollins never explained why he killed Rebecca Landrith.
