In the spring of 2021, a young man's life was cut tragically short in the Sheraden neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Eighteen-year-old Kenneth Hairston was found on the afternoon of April 9th, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The discovery was made after a ShotSpotter alert brought police to the 2700 block of Stafford Street. Despite being rushed to a hospital, the young man succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community to grapple with the violent loss of one of its own. The investigation into Hairston's death led to the arrests of two men, Jamil Malik Lee, then 25, and Jahli Woods, then 24. Both were charged with criminal homicide and conspiracy in connection with the shooting. The case against them, however, would prove to be a prolonged and ultimately unsuccessful legal battle for the prosecution.
