Jeffrey JT Tini, a 13-year-old boy from Newtown, PA, tragically lost his life on May 2, 2022. Jeffrey, along with his younger brother Nelson Tini, aged 9, were killed by their mother, Trinh Nguyen, inside their home. Trinh Nguyen, who was 40 years old at the time, shot both of her sons while they were sleeping. She then attempted to shoot a neighbor but the gun malfunctioned.
After the killings, Nguyen fled to New Jersey, where she ingested narcotics in an apparent suicide attempt but was later found and taken into custody.
Nguyen was charged with first-degree murder for the deaths of Jeffrey and Nelson Tini, as well as attempted murder for her attempt on the neighbor's life. She pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to two life terms without the possibility of parole for the murders, plus an additional 10 to 20 years for the attempted murder. The court proceedings revealed that Nguyen had planned the killings at least a week in advance, leaving a handwritten will and other notes detailing her intentions.
The tragic incident shocked the Upper Makefield community, where the family lived. The motive behind the murders was not explicitly stated, but it was noted that the killings occurred the day before Nguyen and her sons were to be evicted from their rented home due to unpaid rent. The Tini family has faced immense grief and heartbreak, with family members speaking out about the profound impact of the loss during the court proceedings.
Jeffrey Tini was remembered as a strong and talented young boy who excelled in swimming and martial arts. His death, along with that of his brother, has left a lasting void in the lives of those who knew them.
