On April 8, 2011, Jerrick Raphael Jones, a 21-year-old Black male, lost his life in a violent incident at his residence on the west side of Detroit, Michigan. The young man had spent the earlier part of the evening out getting food at a local Coney Island establishment. Around 12:45 a.m., he returned to his home located in the 15700 block of Mark Twain Street, situated between Midland and Pilgrim streets. Shortly after his return, he was inside the house when a knock came at the front door.
Upon opening the door, Jones was confronted by two to three unknown male subjects. Reports indicate that a brief verbal altercation or argument may have ensued between Jones and the individuals on the porch. The situation escalated rapidly when shots were fired, striking Jones. He collapsed and died there on his front porch. The assailants fled the scene, leaving the young man fatally wounded before emergency services could intervene to save his life.
At the time of his death, Jones was actively building a future for himself. He had attended Cooley High School and subsequently earned his GED through the Job Corps program. Committed to further education, he was taking classes at Wayne County Community College while maintaining employment. He worked as a security officer for Detroit Public Schools and also provided security services for local funeral homes. His family described him as a humorous and beloved individual who had hopes of becoming a homeowner.
Years following the homicide, the case remained unsolved with no arrests made. By late 2017, Crime Stoppers of Michigan was still soliciting tips from the public, offering a cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the persons responsible. Despite the passage of time, investigators had not publicly identified specific suspects, and the family continued to appeal to the community for any details that could bring closure to the cold case.
