Walter Chapman, a 58-year-old Caucasian male, was a dedicated officer with the Cleveland Division of Police. On the night of August 22, 1911, Patrolman Chapman was assigned to guard garment workers during a strike. While patrolling Decatur Alley, he was ambushed and shot in the back by an unknown assailant using a .38 caliber handgun. The fatal bullet pierced his heart, and Chapman died instantly.
