Detective John Barnes, aged 40, was shot and killed on February 26, 1932, while attempting to arrest a robbery suspect on Seventh and Chillicothe Streets in Portsmouth, Ohio. Detective Barnes had observed the suspect attempting to rob a woman who was on her way to the bank to deposit checks and cash.
