Teresa Lee Ruppert, a 9-year-old girl of Caucasian ethnicity from Hamilton, Ohio, tragically lost her life on March 30, 1975. She was one of the 11 victims of the Easter Sunday Massacre, a horrific event that took place in her uncle James Urban Ruppert's mother's house on Minor Avenue in Hamilton. The massacre was carried out by her 41-year-old uncle, James Urban Ruppert, who fatally shot his entire family, including Teresa's parents, her grandmother, and her seven siblings.
James Ruppert's motive for the killings was reportedly rooted in his feelings of resentment and neglect from his family. He felt that his mother, Charity, and his brother, Leonard Jr., showed him little affection, and he harbored deep-seated jealousy towards his brother's successful life. On the day of the massacre, James loaded multiple firearms and went on a shooting spree, killing his family members one by one. Teresa, along with her siblings David and Carol, was shot in the kitchen of the house.
Following the massacre, James Ruppert was arrested and charged with 11 counts of aggravated murder. He was found guilty on two counts of murder and received two consecutive life sentences. However, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity on the other nine counts. He was sentenced to serve his time at the Allen Correctional Institution in Lima, Ohio, and later moved to the Franklin Medical Center due to declining health. James Ruppert passed away from natural causes on June 4, 2022, while still incarcerated.
The Easter Sunday Massacre remains one of the deadliest family massacres in American history, leaving a lasting impact on the community of Hamilton and the families of the victims.
