Parole Officer Robert A. White, aged 55, was shot and killed on April 27, 1979, while conducting a surveillance operation on a parolee in Cleveland, Ohio. White, a United States Navy veteran, had served with the Cleveland Police Department for 25 years before retiring and joining the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction as a Parole Officer.
