Sergeant Robert L. Elliott, aged 36, of the Miami County Sheriff's Office in Troy, Ohio, tragically lost his life on February 25, 1987. He was shot and killed with his own weapon while guarding a prisoner inside Stouder Memorial Hospital. The incident occurred when the prisoner requested to take a shower and seized Sergeant Elliott's .357 revolver as Elliott removed the restraints. A struggle ensued, during which the suspect shot Elliott in the chest. Despite being transferred to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, Elliott succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect managed to escape from the hospital but later committed suicide during a shootout with Kentucky police. Elliott had served the Miami County Sheriff's Department for 15 years and was survived by his wife, two daughters, and one son. His dedication and sacrifice were honored when the Ohio governor signed SB 226 on April 29, 2014, naming SR41 between Troy and Covington, Ohio, the Sheriff's Sgt. Robert 'Bobby' Elliott Memorial Highway.
The case did not lead to any arrests or litigations as the suspect took his own life during the confrontation with police. The investigation concluded with the understanding that Elliott's death was a result of the suspect's actions during the struggle.
Sergeant Elliott's legacy continues to be remembered and honored by his family, friends, and fellow officers. His commitment to law enforcement and his ultimate sacrifice are commemorated through various memorials and reflections from those who knew him.
