Ernest Cecil Holbert, a 59-year-old Caucasian male, was a dedicated officer with the Cleveland Division of Police. On January 2, 1972, while responding to a routine traffic accident on Buckeye Road and East Boulevard, Officer Holbert and his partner attempted to arrest an intoxicated driver. The suspect, who was seated in the patrol car, pulled out a handgun and opened fire on the officers.
Officer Holbert was struck in the head by one of the rounds, and despite undergoing four surgeries to remove bullet fragments from his brain, he never fully recovered.
Over the years, Officer Holbert's health deteriorated due to complications from his injuries. He passed away on October 27, 1987, nearly 15 years after the shooting incident. The suspect who shot Officer Holbert was killed by return fire from his partner during the altercation. There were no further arrests or litigations related to Officer Holbert's death, as the incident was considered an accident investigation involving an impaired driver.
Officer Holbert was survived by his wife and eight children, and his legacy continues to be honored by the Cleveland Police Department and the community. His dedication and sacrifice are remembered by his fellow officers and the families he served.
