On February 22, 2013, 20-year-old Male Lawrence Collins was fatally shot outside the Minnie and Lovie Ward Recreation Center on Capitol Avenue in San Francisco's Oceanview neighborhood. Collins, a youth advocate and graduate of the Inner City Youth program, was found with a gunshot wound to the head and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. He had been a promising figure in his community, often speaking to younger members about staying in school. Despite his dedication to community work, he had reportedly been released from jail just two weeks before his death. The homicide was the sixth in San Francisco that year, and Collins was remembered fondly by local leaders who had seen great potential in him.
