Police Specialist Ronald D. Jeter, aged 34, of the Cincinnati Police Department, was tragically killed in the line of duty on December 5, 1997. He and his partner, Officer Daniel Pope, were attempting to serve a felony warrant for domestic violence at an apartment on West Hollister Street. Both officers were in plain clothes and wearing their vests when they entered the apartment. During the arrest, the suspect, 20-year-old Alonzo Davenport, became violent, and a struggle ensued.
Davenport reached behind his back and retrieved a hidden revolver, shooting both officers in the head. After killing the officers, Davenport fled the scene but was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Classen Park, just a block away.
Ronald D. Jeter was a United States Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Cincinnati Police Department for nearly five years. He is survived by his mother, two daughters, a son, and his girlfriend. He is buried in Evergreen Burial Park in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.
The incident led to the arrest of no additional suspects, as the perpetrator, Alonzo Davenport, took his own life immediately following the shooting. There were no further litigations or investigations related to the death of Ronald D. Jeter, as the case was resolved with Davenport's suicide.
