On a cold January day in Detroit, 60-year-old Timothy Perkins, a man known for his kind and non-confrontational nature, was working as a rideshare driver to support his passion for cycling. His life, however, came to a brutal and tragic end on January 21, 2021, when he responded to a ride request that police believe was a setup for a robbery and carjacking.
Instead of passengers, he unknowingly picked up two teenagers with violent intentions.
Perkins was found later in an alley in southwest Detroit, near the area of St. Lawrence and Elmer streets, having been mercilessly beaten with a hammer and stabbed multiple times. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his severe injuries. His car had been stolen, and the city was left with another senseless act of violence. Friends and fellow members of the Metro 313 Cyclones cycling group were left in shock and disbelief, remembering Perkins as a beautiful person who was always a joy to be around.
The investigation into the heinous crime quickly led Detroit police to two young suspects: a 16-year-old male and a 15-year-old female. Their arrests brought a small measure of relief to a grieving community. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office took the serious step of charging the teenagers as adults, citing the particularly violent and premeditated nature of the crime. The evidence, prosecutors stated, would show a clear plan to rob, carjack, and ultimately murder the unsuspecting driver.
The two teenagers were arraigned on charges of first-degree murder, carjacking, and armed robbery. The community was left to grapple with the shocking reality of two young people allegedly orchestrating and carrying out such a brutal attack.
