Derek Wayne Owens, a 36-year-old African American male, was a dedicated police officer with the Cleveland Division of Police. On February 29, 2008, Officer Owens was shot and killed while pursuing four suspects in Cleveland's southeast side. The incident began when Officer Owens and his partner observed the suspects drinking beer in an abandoned lot. As the officers approached, the suspects fled on foot, leading to a brief chase.
During the pursuit, one of the suspects produced a handgun and opened fire, striking Officer Owens below his vest. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Officer Owens succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight while undergoing surgery.
Following the shooting, a house-to-house search was conducted in the area, resulting in the arrest of all four suspects. In November 2008, one of the suspects was convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole. Officer Owens had served with the Cleveland Police Department for 10 years and was assigned to the 4th District. He is survived by his wife, Ericka, and their two children, Sydni and Chandler.
