Derek Wayne Owens, a 36-year-old African American male, was a dedicated police officer with the Cleveland Division of Police. On February 29, 2008, Officer Owens was shot and killed while pursuing four suspects in Cleveland's southeast side. The incident began when Officer Owens and his partner observed the suspects drinking beer in an abandoned lot. As the officers approached, the suspects fled on foot, leading to a brief chase.
