Brandon Jones, an 18-year-old African American male, tragically died on March 19, 2015, in Cleveland, OH. He was shot and killed by Cleveland police officer Alan Buford during an attempted arrest. The incident occurred after Jones allegedly broke into and stole from a convenience store on Parkwood Avenue. When police arrived, Jones exited the store and was instructed to stay down with his hands visible.
However, he began to stand up and turn towards the officers, leading Buford to fear for his life and shoot Jones in the chest.
Buford was charged with negligent homicide but was acquitted in 2017. The City of Cleveland later settled a lawsuit with Jones' family for $910,000 in 2018. The settlement brought some closure to the family, although they continued to seek justice for Brandon's death.
