Elijah Johnson, a 13-month-old boy, tragically lost his life on January 14, 2016, in Dayton, Ohio. He was caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting while being held by his mother's boyfriend, Isaiah Smith, outside a house on Arlene Avenue. The shooting also injured Smith and Elijah's grandmother, Diana Hicks. Detectives believe that Smith was the primary target of the attack, carried out by occupants of a black Chevrolet Impala.
Following the incident, Hicks drove away from the
scene, leaving Elijah and Smith at Good Samaritan Hospital. When police searched her car, they found marijuana and a large amount of cash. Smith, who was wounded in the shooting, has not been cooperating with the investigation.
Shawn D. Smith Jr., the man accused of the shooting, was later convicted on all counts, including murder, in the death of Elijah Johnson and the shooting of Isaiah Smith and Diana Hicks. During the trial, Smith claimed that he fired in self-defense after Isaiah Smith initiated the gunfire. However, the jury found him guilty, and he was sentenced to 37 years-to-life in prison.
Isaiah Smith was also charged and found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and other related charges. He received a 17-year prison sentence for his involvement in the shootout. Another individual, Dontay King, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to three years in prison.
