She was shot in the neck while inside the condominium of her boyfriend, Jeffrey Greiner, a 25-year-old North Royalton man. Initially, Greiner claimed that Shaver was shot from outside the condo by a bullet that entered through a window. However, he later admitted that he was the one who shot her.
